Gestural abstraction has been my primary painting vocabulary. In ceramics, I am interested in allowing the clay to have its way while I attempt to coax it into forms which retain a good deal of the original gesture of the hand. That also goes for the surfaces, which I treat much like a canvas, through multiple firings. Exploring the vessel as a jumping off point for sculpture yields a hybrid form.
Roughly constructed, the vessel allows me to play with the loose and layered application of glazes and underglazes related to my painting style. As a rule breaker I am committed to discovery that emerges from trial and error within loose parameters, rather than a plan for each piece.
I expect that the work I produce will continue to be formally wide ranging. My goal is to challenge myself to create a body of work that evokes the spirit of play, which is the organizing principle of my practice.
